Sziget 2020 Line-up
After what felt like a lifetime, at 3pm on the 12th of February, Sziget announced their lineup. Of course it's not complete just yet, but in my opinion, a rather good start has been made. Most of the main headliners have been announced, with a few more left to keep us on our toes!
In this post, I will breaking down some of my favourite announcements, and leaving a few guesses surrounding the other headliners yet to be announced.
The schedule has yet to be announced, so for the purpose of this post, I'll just work my way through 😊
I'm going to start with Bakermat. I was meant to see him last year in Benicassim, however, due to circumstances he had to pull out last minute. I was looking forward to his set, so I'm happy with this announcement. I think he, along with Sam Feldt, deffinatly give off the island vibes that are to be expected by most attending.
I wrote about Mabel in my Reading and Leeds reaction, however, I believe she's worth mentioning again. This is due to her now being booked for two major festivals. Although she is yet to get a headline spot, I think this is pretty impressive, and well deserved given the growth she has had in the last year and half or so.
I sadly didn't attend Glastonbury last year, but did have the pleasure of watching Sigrid on BBC. Her set was very enthusiastic and energetic, and she was very vocal in getting the crowd involved. Even though I wouldn't class myself as a 'fan', I think she will be worth going to see.
The next two acts, I'm going to put together. That being Diplo, and Major Lazer, for obvious reasons. I like some of Diplos' solo projects, so of course it's worth giving him a mention as I'll probably go and see him. However, I am mainly excited for Major Lazer. They have plenty of recognisable tunes, and can remix chart toppers to a very high standard. I saw a few people commenting on how frequently Major Lazer attend Sziget, and they didn't seem to joyous at them headlining this year. I personally think they do a great job, and considering Sziget like to theme their nights, they can deffinately soundtrack those well.
I've never seen Mark Ronson live before, but he's got a pretty extensive repertoire, and huge songwriting/producing credits. I think he deffinately needs checked out, so I'm looking forward to that. Foals are another act doing the festival rounds this year. I'll already be seeing them at FIB in July, but they do a great set so they won't ruled out at Sziget. They have plenty of fans, and seem to have gotten a lot of attention from the announcement.
Keeping in tone with those who've been doing the rounds, let's talk about Khalid. Once again already on the line-up for FIB, but once again I'll probably check him out twice. He has two huge albums, plus plenty of features to complete a fun set list. I have never seen him before for long, but what I heard was pretty good. I would say it's more about his vocals and the recognisability of his songs, rather than him putting on a show, but he'll generate a large crowd and so it would be silly to miss him.
I may get a bit of hate for my next opinion, but hopefully you'll understand. Lewis Capaldi, not a massive fan of his tunes. For me, a tad boring. I'll probably go and see him nonetheless, and I'll admit he's got a great voice, and is doing unbelievably well for himself. I'm just hoping he cracks out a few of his jokes to keep the mood up, but hands will be in the air like everyone else for someone you loved 😂.
Stormzy, once again doing the rounds. I won't go into too much detail as I talked a bit about him in my last post. He can deffinately hold a show, after his Glasto 2019 spot, however, he's not a headliner at this years Sziget. He has some great tunes, crowd will probably be bouncing, all in all a must see!
I am sure plenty of people will be buzzed about The Strokes. All I've seen on festival forums is yearning for them. An insane band, and even better live. I'm not going to pretend like I'm their biggest fan, but a headline spot is so deserved. These guys are house party gold, so it seems they'll be turning the main stage and arena into one massive house party, and I can't wait!
Another huge band announcement are Kings Of Leon. Seen them last year and was skeptical, but have to admit some of my best memories came from that night. It was another festival, and that's why I think they'll be so good as it'll create the same sort of atmosphere. Highlights were pyro, back down south and supersoaker, so fingers crossed they play those!
The first, and at the moment, only female headliner Dua Lipa. I believe she attended Sziget back in 2018, so a shock to see her back so soon. That can only be a good thing though. She has her new album 'Future Nostalgia', out this year, which already includes hits such as Don't Start Now. Her last album was huge, can't think of a day I didn't hear New rules. Without realising it, I think she will have a dense set list filled with some crowd pleasers. I've seen her do live performances on the Brits and Grammys etc, and they have been colourful and fun which is exactly the vibes of Sziget.
I've saved the one I'm most excited about for last, none other than Calvin Harris. He holds a special place in my heart as he was one of the first festival acts I ever seen. I can't say I'm still on the EDM train the way I used to be in my early teens, but tbh neither is he as it seems. I imagine he'll be bringing back some of the old classics and stuff from 18 months and motion, but I'm hoping to hear a bit of funk wav bounces in there too. Of course he has some new tunes, such as Promises and One Kiss to play, as well as his recent project Love Regenerator, which gives me early techno/trance vibes. As far as DJs go, he's up there with the greats and is sure to be incredible at this year's festival.
Those were some of the acts I'm most excited for, however, I realise I've left out some of the acts I've seen other people stir over. Acts such as Foster the people, A$AP Rocky, FKA Twigs, R3HAB, Denzel Curry, Keane and blackbear. I'll also make an attempt at seeing the above, plus some of the other smaller acts I've not mentioned/ not heard of.
So there you have it, who I'm excited to see at this year's Sziget. I'm more than happy to hear your thoughts, and see who you're excited for 😊
Before I finish this post, I thought I would make a list of acts that have been mentioned as possible headliners. As we know, Sziget lasts 7 days, and from last years there is usually 7-10 headliners, some of them being joint. That means, this line-up is incomplete. Although I would love to see acts such as Taylor Swift, Haim, Empire of the Sun, Foo Fighters or Kacey Musgraves headline, I don't think that's who will be added. My guesses have been listed below:
° Eminem
° Shawn Mendes
° The Weeknd
°Rage Against the Machine
° Katy Perry
Now, obviously their could be more, or I could be totally off, but it will be worth revisiting this post at a later date to see what happens 😉
Until then, thanks for reading 🏕️
